US Attorney Firings: Is Fitzgerald Next?
Tue Jan 16, 2007 at 03:36:59 PM PDT
There is a great deal of warranted agitation today over the very recent forced resignations of a number of U.S. attorneys. Justin Rood over at TPM Muckraker has compiled the following list of seven, with a possible unnamed eighth from Texas mentioned this morning by Sen. Feinstein:
San Francisco - 1/16/07 - Kevin V. Ryan - unclear
Nevada - 1/15/07 - Daniel Bogden - pushed out
San Diego - 1/12/07 - Carole Lam - pushed out
New Mexico - 12/19/06 - David Igleslias - pushed out
Arizona - 12/19/06 - Paul K. Charlton - unclear
Seattle - 12/15/06 - John McKay - unclear; likely pushed out
Little Rock (Ark.) - 12/15/06 - Bud Cummins - pushed out
Can anyone think of another US attorney who may be crossing up the White House at this moment?
It just hit me that Patrick Fitzgerald is being teed up for dismissal by the White House, via Abu Gonzales, under the very same provision of the Patriot Act that has sent the previous eight packing. Further, the very fact these eight have accepted their dismissal works against Fitzgerald at first blush, who would be seen as a maverick for bucking the president's pleasure at his resignation.
Is there any way not to construe the purge of seven of Fitzgerald's esteemed colleagues as a clear act of prosecutorial intimidation against Fitzgerald, just as he brings the Vice President's former chief of staff to trial? I mean, this new Patriot Act provision has been on the books for 10 months, and yet, each of these forced resignations has taken place within a month (excl. the holidays) of the beginning of this trial. The very fact that the forced resignations all took place so closely together, and over the holiday, raises further suspicion of a concerted effort to catch the media, Congressional critics and even the attorneys themselves flat-footed and unable to assess the grounds of their masters' complaints.
The premises under which the White House may ask for Fitzgerald's resignation have expanded considerably now that seven of them have asceded to the terms of a Patriot Act legal provision that none of them has (publicly) challenged.
Am I succombing to tin poisoning, or is Fitz going to be scouting for the Marlins in February?
